2022-23
Our teachers is: Miss M. Evans. Miss Evans’ PPA time will be covered by Miss Maloney for a full day on Wednesdays.
Our teaching assistants are Mrs Wibberly and Miss Munir.
Our Class Link Governor is Ruth Broadhurst.
Our Day
In the morning we usually focus on English and Mathematics. In English, we are developing into excellent independent writers through a combination of The Write Stuff writing programme, topic-linked writing tasks and specific phonics, spelling and grammar lessons. We love reading in Class Two and read daily through all of our curriculum areas. We read as a whole class, in small groups, in pairs and individually. We broadly follow the structure of the White Rose scheme for mathematics and further develop our mathematical knowledge through practical games, activities and problem solving.
In the afternoons our learning focuses on Science, computing, DT, History, Geography, Art, DT and Music and is driven by our termly topics. Each term we have a Science based topic and a humanities based topic into which we try to weave all other curriculum areas. We also develop our spiritual, social and emotional skills through weekly RE and PSHE.
Please see the curriculum overview document below for more information on our topic and learning areas throughout the year.
Rewards
We are rewarded through Team Points for the right attitude to learning, effort and behaviour. Our behaviour is monitored through the SCARF Behaviour system. Each day someone will be awarded SCARF of the day award. This is someone who has stood out in some way, following our SCARF principles.
S – Safe C – Caring A – Achieving R – Respectful F – Friendly.
As a reward for their whole class togetherness, good behaviour and focused work, the children have periods of ‘Friendship Time’ throughout the week which they can ‘earn’ collectively. We believe this gives the children a shared goal, allows them to work as a ‘team’ and encourage each other.

Home Learning
We would like to emphasise practicing basic skills for Home Learning. These are non-negotiable elements that focus on Reading or being read to, spelling and times table practice on a daily basis.
Spellings
Spellings will be linked to the phonics sounds we are working on during our Read Write Inc sessions. For now, we will be testing the children on the common exception words from year 1 as this should give us a ‘benchmark’ as to where we can start. Spellings will be given weekly on a Friday and also tested the following Friday.
Reading
Children can change their home reading books independently whenever they are ready for a new reading book. Each morning on arrival in class children have time to return old books and choose a new book from their assessed level. Please read daily with your child at home. Fluency is the real key to reading development in Year Two and regular reading at home and school will see your child progress from phonetic reader to fluent reader. Please keep a record of the books your child has read in the Reading Record and encourage your child to write about their favourite parts or characters, write a book review or compare the book to others they have read.
Maths
Children are tested on maths facts and then times tables each week in Class Two. Tests are on Wednesdays and children will move through the times tables at an individual rate in accordance with their progress and development. In Year Two we focus on the 2s, 10s, 5s and 3 times tables and look at both multiplication and division facts. Throughout the week, we do lots of fun practical activities which support the children’s learning of times tables facts but any help you can give at home will also benefit your child. We recommend accessing the Supermovers songs from the BBC website and also the Times Table Rock Stars app to which school have a subscription. Please send Mental Maths folders into school each Wednesday. We will then communicate previous scores and send new practice sheets home for the following week.
